Italian towns enforce strict bans on public alcohol consumption and smoking

The municipality of Vignola in Modena Province instituted an ordinance on 15 July that prohibits smoking in public green areas and bans the sale and consumption of alcoholic drinks in open containers across the city centre. Violations carry fines of €1,000 to €5,000, and two businesses have already received €1,000 penalties.

In Marsala, Sicily, mayor Andreana Patti signed a similar decree that bans the sale, serving and public consumption of alcoholic and super‑alcoholic beverages between 23:00 and 06:00. The measure, in force until 30 October, also targets night‑time disturbances and applies to restaurants, bars, private clubs, itinerant vendors and vending machines, with fines up to €5,000 for non‑compliance.
