Italian towns grapple with rising illegal dumping sites

In the Romagna village of Giovecca, residents reported a large, open‑air dump of assorted waste material piled around an abandoned house on Via Gradizza, including wooden crates, plastic containers, metal shelving, old furniture and bags of paper and plastic. The dumping appears to have taken place overnight and follows earlier incidents of illegal waste disposal in the area, such as a previous find of asbestos waste.

In Messina, Sicily, a growing mini‑landfill has been identified along Via Felice Bisazza, close to the Messina Social City complex. Citizens observed bags of garbage and a discarded blanket accumulating near a roadside tree. Municipal authorities responded by posting a warning sign stating that surveillance footage has been captured and will be handed to the competent bodies to identify and sanction the offenders.

Both municipalities are dealing with persistent illegal waste‑throwing, emphasizing the need for stronger enforcement and public awareness to curb the practice.
