Italian towns halt new fiber‑optic road works over unsafe repairs

In the Tuscan town of Torre del Lago, the local group “Per Fermi Mai” has denounced the quality of road restorations carried out after recent fiber‑optic cable installations, citing cracks, uneven surfaces and safety risks for cyclists, scooter riders and motorcyclists. The group urges stricter oversight and a comprehensive maintenance strategy.

In Perugia, Mayor Vittoria Ferdinandi and public‑works assessor Francesco Zuccherini announced a suspension of new authorisations for FiberCop until the municipality’s long‑standing road‑repair obligations are met. They highlighted that roughly 150,000 m² of road surface have remained unrepaired or inadequately repaired since 2016, and recent works have again produced deteriorated sections. An official notice has been issued for the Colle Umberto area, and the city is prepared to impose fines or undertake the repairs itself to protect public safety.
