Italian towns launch new library spaces and reading pact initiatives

The City of Milan has allocated six municipal properties to independent neighbourhood bookstores through the "Liber in libris" programme, part of the Sefémm plan. Nine offers were received, six were selected, resulting in three new shops, two continuations and a new operator, with large chains barred from participation. Selection weighted 70% technical merit and 30% economic criteria, aiming to keep cultural activity alive in districts.

The municipality of Reggiolo issued a public call for schools, associations, bookstores and citizens to join a "Patto locale per la lettura". The pact, coordinated by the Biblioteca Civica "Giorgio Ambrosoli", is required for the town to qualify for the national "Città che legge" label. Over the 2026‑2029 triennium participants can co‑design events, share spaces and resources, gain visibility and promote reading, especially among young and vulnerable residents, at no cost.
