Italian towns of Como and Vibo Valentia dispute school closures and service readiness

Nova Como issued a strong statement condemning Mayor Alessandro Rapinese for his handling of the Corridoni school closure in Como, accusing him of bullying language and demanding responsibility. The civic movement criticized remarks such as “scemo più scemo” and “someone is playing with fire,” and called for a civil, respectful debate. The regional administrative court (Tar) had already rejected an appeal against the school’s dismission, but discussions continue among the municipality, school officials and the provincial education office about the timing and logistics of the closure.

In Vibo Valentia, Assessor for Public Education Stefano Soriano told the municipal council that the town’s education administration is fully operational ahead of the September 15 start of the school year. He outlined that school meals, transport, special‑needs support, and textbook provision are in place, aiming to ensure a smooth restart for families. Mayor Enzo Romeo’s administration emphasized the readiness of services despite opposition criticism.
