Italian towns open new roundabouts to boost traffic safety and reduce emissions

In Mestre, a district of Venice, a new experimental roundabout at the intersection of via Vespucci and via Bissuola will become operational in the early hours of 15 July. The 200,000‑euro project replaces a traffic‑light controlled junction, lowers the speed limit to 30 km/h and is intended to improve safety, shorten waiting times and cut vehicle emissions, as supported by a study showing significant reductions in carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and fuel consumption.

In Viterbo, work on a roundabout at the junction with provincial road 22 near Acquabianca begins on 13 July. During construction, traffic will run in an alternating one‑way pattern controlled by a temporary signal system. Both initiatives are part of broader municipal programmes aimed at modernising road networks and enhancing mobility across Italy’s urban areas.
