Italian towns Pontremoli and Pontedera enact new public‑space measures

The municipality of Pontremoli introduced a comprehensive ordinance on May 12 aimed at tightening rules for dog owners in public areas. Signed by Mayor Clara Cavellini, the regulation requires dogs to be leashed (maximum 1.5–2 m), mandates muzzles for breeds deemed risky, obliges owners to carry bags for solid waste and water for liquid waste, bans dogs from playgrounds, fountains and other human‑only zones, and enforces micro‑chip identification. Violations carry fines of €50‑€500, with higher penalties for repeat offenders.

In nearby Pontedera, the council approved a direct‑contract procurement to supply, plant and maintain new potted trees throughout the city centre. The initiative, announced on May 17, seeks to refresh the urban landscape, improve aesthetic appeal and increase green cover in main streets and squares.

Both measures reflect a growing focus by local Italian authorities on improving safety, sanitation and visual quality in public spaces.
