Italian towns proclaim civic mourning after teen road fatalities

The municipality of Crosia in Sicily declared a day of civic mourning on 2 July 2026 following the death of local youth Samuel De Luca, who was killed in a serious road accident on 27 June along State Road 106. The town lowered its flags to half‑mast, held a minute of silence and invited residents and local organisations to observe the mourning.

Similarly, the city of Messina announced a civic mourning on 4 July 2026 in connection with the funeral of 15‑year‑old Giulia Scimone, who died in a road crash at Torre Faro on 28 June. Flags were again displayed at half‑mast, public events were suspended during the funeral ceremony at the Messina Cathedral, and officials called on the community to respect traffic safety.

Both proclamations underscore the local authorities’ efforts to express solidarity with the families and to highlight road‑safety concerns after the consecutive tragedies.
