Italian towns reshape waste cleanup funding after private takeovers affect PNrr aid

The municipality of Torre Annunziata in Campania will return about €890,538 of advance payments received from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) after private owners assumed responsibility for the environmental remediation of the former Apreamare site. Because the site is no longer classified as an “orphan” area, it no longer qualifies for PNRR funding. The town will also seek reimbursement of roughly €172,602 already spent on studies, investigations and professional services.

In Sicily, the regional government approved €57.8 million for waste‑related projects. Funding includes €13.3 million for the cleanup of contaminated areas, with €11 million earmarked for the former Acqua dei Corsari landfill in Palermo. An additional €2.3 million will support environmental characterisation of five former public dumps. A separate €15 million programme will finance composting initiatives for organic waste, and €33 million will be allocated to the construction and upgrade of municipal waste‑collection centres across the island.
