Italian towns roll out tax relief for local property and water fees

The municipal council of Gangi approved a new regulation that lets taxpayers regularise unpaid local taxes – TARI, IMU and water fees – for the period 2000‑2023 without penalties or interest. The measure aims to help residents settle outstanding amounts while allowing the commune to recover revenue that would otherwise be lost. Mayor Giuseppe Ferrarello said the rule offers a “real possibility” for citizens to clear debts without additional burdens.

In the nearby town of Marano, the extraordinary commission is preparing a statement to clarify a recent change to the TARI bonus system. The new rule, introduced by the municipal council, allegedly prevents families in economic hardship from combining the 50% local bonus with the national 25% social bonus, potentially raising their bill. The commission says the bonus will remain combinable for disabled households and sole occupants, but the controversy has sparked protests from residents who fear higher payments.

Both municipalities are adjusting their local tax policies in response to fiscal pressures and public concern.
