Italian towns Spoleto and Mandas roll out new stray‑dog and pet‑friendly initiatives

The municipality of Spoleto approved an integrated plan called “Spoleto Città Pet Friendly”, outlining five lines of action to improve domestic‑animal welfare and curb stray‑dog numbers. The program includes a new shelter management plan, leishmaniasis monitoring with the Istituto Zooprofilattico Umbria e Marche, free micro‑chipping and sterilisation for shepherd and guard dogs, intensified police checks on livestock farms, and a tourism push under the “Welcome Buddy” project. Since 2021 the municipal shelter “La Casa di Buddy” has reduced its resident dogs from about 140 to 80.

In Mandas, Mayor Umberto Oppus announced a comprehensive anti‑stray initiative that will coordinate the local council, police, the ASL veterinary service and a partner shelter. Measures feature free or subsidised micro‑chip implantation, regular field checks, promotion of sterilisation to prevent unwanted litters, and a clear protocol for handling wandering dogs. Both towns aim to raise public awareness, encourage adoptions and lower municipal costs associated with stray‑dog management.
