Italian towns tackle water safety and supply challenges

The mayor of Scicli in Sicily imposed an emergency ordinance banning the use of water from the Ponchielli reservoir for drinking and food preparation after tests revealed nitrate and nitrite levels above legal limits. The restriction applies to the Jungi district and several surrounding streets; other domestic uses remain permitted until further testing confirms safety.

In the nearby region of San Benedetto, authorities are completing a new Ciip water tank and distribution network intended to secure the supply for the critical zones of Porto d'Ascoli and Ragnola. The €1 million project, featuring a 130 m³ reservoir, is slated for final completion by July with full operation expected in October, improving continuity and quality of water delivery.
