Italian transport drivers face staffing shortages and unpaid wages

In Siena, Italy, transport unions (FILT CGIL, FIT CISL, UILTRASPORTI and FAISA CISA) warn that a chronic shortage of drivers and workshop technicians is jeopardising local public‑transport services, especially with schools set to reopen. They demand an immediate hiring plan, criticize the temporary depot at Isola d’Arbia as a stop‑gap, and oppose increased subcontracting, saying the problem will only worsen without more staff.

In another Italian municipality, members of the school‑transport commission – Ezio Di Genesio Pagliuca, Barbara Bonanni and Paolo Calicchio – say bus drivers have not received their salaries for months. They accuse the local council of neglect and call for urgent payment of arrears, arguing that delayed wages threaten the ability of drivers to support their families and maintain essential school‑transport services.
