Italian transport unions press for safety upgrades and job security

In Taranto, union groups including FILT‑CGIL, FIT‑CISL, UILTRASPORTI and FAISA CISAL protested the delayed suspension of five bus stops on the Litoranea Salentina. They allege severe traffic congestion and unsafe conditions for drivers, cyclists and passengers, and demand that the agreed safety measures be implemented before the 1 August deadline rather than being postponed.

On the island of Ischia, the same union federation, together with Nidil CGIL, urged the public‑transport operator EAV and the staffing agency GEVI to guarantee stable contracts for temporary workers. The unions called for correct calculation of mission periods, full application of the sector’s collective bargaining agreement and immediate dialogue to resolve the precarity affecting staff who keep essential transport services running.

Both actions underline broader concerns over public‑transport safety and labour rights in Italy, urging authorities and operators to act promptly to avoid further incidents and protect workers.
