Italian transport workers attacked; unions call for immediate safety measures

A bus driver on a public‑transport line in Celle Ligure was brutally assaulted while on duty. The provincial UGL Autoferrotranvieri of Savona condemned the attack, expressed solidarity with the victim and demanded urgent security steps, including fully protected driver cabins, active video surveillance, emergency buttons linked to police centres and targeted patrols during peak periods. The union warned that “the time of words and superficial solidarity is over” and urged authorities to identify and punish the attacker.

At Milan’s Lambrate station, a Frecciarossa train conductor was grabbed, struck in the face and thrown to the ground during a technical stop. Passengers intervened and prevented further harm, but the assailant escaped through an open door. UIL Trasporti Lombardia denounced the incident as proof of “totally out‑of‑control” safety on board, citing “we have once again escaped death by a hair’s breadth.” The union called for stricter onboard controls and better protection for transport staff.
