Italian unions stage Pfizer layoff protest and construction safety strike

Union federations in Catania will hold a joint sit‑in on 17 July in front of the Pfizer plant to oppose the company's plan to dismiss 330 workers. The unions demand that Pfizer withdraw the layoffs, engage in transparent negotiations and seek alternative solutions to protect jobs and the local economy.

In the province of Florence, building‑trade unions have announced a provincial strike on 14 July after a 48‑year‑old construction worker died in a Sesto Fiorentino site. The strike aims to press for stricter safety enforcement, more frequent inspections, better training and stronger protections for workers and their families.

Both actions reflect escalating labour tensions in Italy over job security and workplace safety.
