Italian universities miss global top 100 in ARWU research rankings

Italian universities are absent from the top 100 in the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), which prioritizes research performance metrics such as Nobel Prizes, highly cited researchers, and publications in journals like Nature and Science. La Sapienza University of Rome is the highest-ranked Italian institution at 153rd, followed by the University of Padua.

In contrast, China shows significant growth in global research standing, securing 234 spots in the top 1,000 universities, ahead of the United States with 187. While the ARWU focuses on scientific productivity, other rankings like QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education place La Sapienza at 128th and 170th respectively, suggesting different outcomes when measuring teaching quality and employability.

Amidst these academic discussions, Sapienza University of Rome is preparing for rector elections scheduled from October 6 to 9. Five candidates have been validated for the position. Student representatives, including the Unione degli universitari (Udu), have expressed a desire for a leader who can advocate for student needs regarding housing, transportation, and increased research funding through negotiations with national institutions.
