Italian university student mobility shows regional disparities
New data from the Skuola.net Observatory, based on Ministry of University and Research open data, reveals significant trends in Italian university student mobility for the 2024/2025 academic year.
In Calabria, approximately 34% of resident university students—totaling 19,963 individuals—choose to study outside their home region. This rate is notably higher than the national average of 20.83%. The migration is often driven by the availability of specific degree courses and specialization opportunities elsewhere.
Conversely, Campania demonstrates a different trend, with only about 15% of its 181,787 resident students attending universities outside the region. Regional Councilor Fernando Errico noted that this reflects the capacity of the Campanian university system to provide educational opportunities locally, reducing the need for students to relocate.
