Italian utilities install filtration systems to curb PFAS and boost source water quality

Gestione Acqua S.p.A., the integrated water service operator for 72 municipalities in the Alessandrino area, installed two active‑carbon filtration units in February 2026 at wells in Castelnuovo Scrivia after detecting PFAS levels above upcoming regulatory limits. The project also involved decommissioning a well on Via XX Settembre and strengthening the supply network through inter‑aqueduct connections. Post‑treatment tests showed PFAS concentrations falling well below legal thresholds, and continuous monitoring will continue in coordination with local authorities.

In the Province of Bergamo, Uniacque, the regional water manager, launched a San Pellegrino‑funded initiative under the F.O.N.T.E. programme to upgrade the Nossana spring source. The plan includes a new filtration plant, the installation of 250 valves, over 2,500 m of piping and advanced treatment solutions, delivering a capacity of 432 L/s. The project aims to ensure service continuity, infrastructure resilience and sustainable water resource management.

Both efforts reflect a broader push by Italian water utilities to address emerging contaminants and reinforce the safety and reliability of public water supplies.
