Italian wine exports show regional divergence in Lombardy and Veneto
Recent data reveals contrasting trends in the Italian wine export market between the Lombardy and Veneto regions. In Lombardy, the Oltrepò Pavese district has seen significant growth, with wine exports from the province of Pavia rising from 25.2 million euros in 2021 to 40.2 million euros in 2025. This represents an average annual growth rate of 9.5%, significantly outpacing the national Italian wine growth rate of 1.6% during the same period.
The Oltrepò Pavese is a major producer, accounting for 48% of Lombardy’s wine and serving as Italy’s leading area for Pinot Nero production. Additionally, sparkling wine production in the area has increased from 10,000 to 19,000 hectoliters by 2025.
Conversely, the Veneto region is experiencing a slowdown. While the volume of wine exported from Veneto increased by 1.2% in 2025, the total export value fell by 1.2% to 2.93 billion euros due to a decline in average price per liter. This contraction intensified in the first half of 2026, with export values dropping 8.4% compared to the same period in 2025. Despite these challenges, Veneto remains a national pillar, accounting for 36.3% of Italy’s total wine exports, with strong performance in the sparkling wine sector led by Prosecco.
