Italian wine guides highlight top value labels and industry shifts
The DoctorWine Essential Guide to Italian Wines 2027 has identified 910 labels earning a “thumbs up” for their balance of quality and price, specifically those costing under 18 euros. Within this group, a top ten list was established for wines scoring above 90/100 with a price point below 8.50 euros. The Umbria region dominates this selection with four of the top ten entries. The first-place position was awarded to Bigi’s Orvieto Classico 2025, priced at approximately 5 euros.
Other notable entries in the top ten include Tenuta Le Velette’s Orvieto Berganorio 2025 and Vitalonga’s Rosso Elcione 2024. The list also features selections from Lombardy, Marche, Abruzzo, and Emilia-Romagna.
In a separate editorial direction, the Winemag 2027 Guide has adopted “Disobedience” as its guiding theme. The publication argues that the Italian wine sector must move away from rigid formulas and market-driven hierarchies—such as the assumption that higher concentration or more oak necessarily equates to higher value—to better connect with modern consumers and embrace diverse expressions of identity and restraint.
