Italian wine industry sees major awards and new observatory announcement

The 35th Merano WineFestival has announced several major developments for the Italian wine sector. For the first time, four wines received a perfect 100/100 score at the WineHunter Award Platinum: Ferrari Trento Doc 2002, Cantina Terlano Doc Rarity 2013, Attilio Contini Vernaccia di Oristano Doc Riserva 1998, and Avignonesi Vin Santo di Montepulciano Doc Occhio di Pernice 2012.

Looking toward the future, the Merano Wine Observatory will launch in 2027. This permanent project aims to analyze market transformations, production trends, and consumer behavior to help producers and institutions navigate challenges such as climate change and technological impacts.

In related industry news, the Winemag Guide 2027 has named J. Hofstatter the best Italian winery, achieving an average score of 96.10. The Cesarini Sforza Trento Doc ‘Aquila Reale Riserva 2015’ was recognized as the Italian wine of the year. The guide’s 2027 theme, ‘Disobedience,’ encourages a critical re-evaluation of industry conventions, focusing on balance and origin rather than price or extraction levels.
