Italian wineries win major awards at Mondial des Vins Extrêmes

Italian wineries specializing in heroic viticulture have received multiple honors at the 34th Mondial des Vins Extrêmes, an international competition organized by CERVIM.

In the Taburno region, Cosimo Capasso Vini di Montagna won a Gold Medal for its Campania Rosso IGP Pinot Nero Elite Cru 2024. The winery also received the “CERVIM Futuro 2026” special award for the highest score among producers led by viticulturists under the age of 35. The project focuses on high-altitude cultivation of Pinot Nero and Chardonnay, utilizing research into soil and climate to adapt these varieties to the slopes of Taburno.

On the island of Pantelleria, the Passito di Pantelleria DOC “A Signurina” 2022 by I Giardini di Tanit earned a Grand Gold Medal. Other recognitions included the CERVIM Small Islands Prize and Excellence Prize for Prosit’s Passito Sentivento 2014, as well as a special award for Carlo Pellegrino & C.

Local authorities in Pantelleria noted that these achievements highlight the value of traditional agricultural techniques, such as dry-stone wall terracing, which are increasingly vital for resilience against climate change. However, the region faces ongoing challenges regarding labor stability and the need for permanent housing to support year-round agricultural workers.
