Italian wines achieve major success at international competitions
Italian wines achieved significant success at recent international competitions. At the Mundus Vini Summer Tasting 2026, Italy ranked first with 466 awarded wines, including 5 Grand Gold, 287 Gold, and 174 Silver medals. This performance surpassed competitors from Spain and Germany. Within Italy, the Veneto region led the medal count with 97 awards, followed by Tuscany and Puglia.
Additionally, Cantina Le Macchie’s ‘L’Ultimo Baluardo 2023’ won a Gold Medal at the Mondial des Vins Extrêmes 2026, an international competition focused on heroic viticulture. The winning wine is made from the Cesenese Nero grape, an indigenous variety from the Rieti hills that has been documented in the region since the 19th century. The success highlights efforts by ARSIAL to preserve and valorize the agricultural biodiversity of the Lazio region.
