Italian youth express political disconnect and social anger

A recent Ipsos Doxa survey of 2,002 Italians aged 18 to 34 reveals a significant gap between young citizens and the political establishment. While over 75% of respondents believe politics can improve lives and national development, many feel the current political offerings fail to address their needs. Approximately 55% of youth feel that politics does not provide adequate spaces for authentic engagement, and 62% perceive they have no influence over government decision-makers.

Psychological perspectives on recent unrest, including incidents in Milan, suggest that the anger expressed by Generation Z—whether through peaceful protest or property destruction—stems from a profound desire to be seen and recognized. Experts note that this sentiment is prevalent both online and offline, often manifesting as a reaction to feeling marginalized or unheard by adult institutions and social structures.
