Italian youth face growing loneliness and mental‑health strain

Research by the Fondazione Arché indicates that more than 60% of Italian teenagers rely heavily on digital platforms, and around 200,000 youths are almost completely isolated in their rooms. About 10% of adolescents are estimated to experience chronic social withdrawal, a condition linked to anxiety, performance pressure and the constant need to project an image online.

Sociologist Cristina Pasqualini of the Università Cattolica di Milano says the distress extends beyond the stereotypical “maranza” image. She highlights hidden forms of school disengagement, where students attend classes but feel emotionally and cognitively distant, and points to the pandemic as an accelerator of pre‑existing relational fragilities. Pasqualini calls for schools and communities to provide authentic listening, meaningful relationships and support for mental‑health awareness.

Both sources stress that while the visible signs of youth unrest attract attention, the broader, less visible fragility affects a wide range of adolescents across stable families, requiring a shift from purely academic metrics to nurturing wellbeing and future‑orientation.
