Italian‑British Study Maps Fruit Fly Nervous System
A collaborative team from Italy’s Institute of Neuroscience (CNR‑IN) in Milan and the United Kingdom’s MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge completed the most extensive molecular mapping of the Drosophila melanogaster nervous cord, publishing the findings in Nature. The research revealed that each neuron carries a molecular “barcode” reflecting the order of its generation, a principle that helps explain how neuronal diversity arises during embryonic development.
The study also identified mechanisms behind sexual dimorphism, showing that programmed cell death creates male‑specific neuronal populations and that simultaneously born cells can follow different genetic pathways. All data have been released on an open online platform for further scientific use.
