In the Sorrento Peninsula, the motonave ‘Giovannina’ was sunk by German artillery on September 11, 1943. The vessel, a 14-ton passenger boat used for transporting goods and people between Sorrento and Naples, was carrying over 100 passengers when it came under fire near Torre Annunziata. At the time, German forces had blocked land routes, leaving sea travel as a primary connection to Naples.

In Molise, the city of Isernia faced a devastating Allied air raid on the morning of September 10, 1943. Seeking to disrupt German logistics and infrastructure, such as railway hubs and bridges leading to the Gustav Line, 34 Boeing B-17 bombers from the 99th Bomb Group launched an attack. The raid occurred during a busy market day, catching the population by surprise as sirens failed to sound.
