Italy road deaths drop in 2025 while accidents increase
In 2025 Italy recorded 177,207 road accidents with injuries, a rise of 2.2% over 2024. The number of injured rose to 237,822 (+1.7%). Fatalities fell to 2,868, a 5.3% reduction and the first time deaths dropped below 3,000 since 2021. Regional data show the trend varies. In Puglia, deaths were 177 (‑19.9%) and total victims fell 21.2% to 190, while total incidents rose 1.2% to 11,249. Abruzzo registered 76 deaths (‑11.6%) and a mortality rate of six per 100,000, still higher than the national average. Naples reported 27 deaths (‑22.9%) and 2,670 accidents, with injuries up 2.1%; Campania saw 244 deaths (‑6.5%) and 11,392 accidents. Friuli‑Venezia Giulia had 73 deaths, unchanged, but incidents increased 8.8% to 3,511.
Micromobility users suffered 253 deaths, a 21.6% rise, and the social cost of road accidents exceeded €18 billion, about 1 % of Italy’s GDP. The Italian Association of Driving Schools (Unasca) called for greater investment in driver education to curb the increasing number of accidents.
