Italy A1 motorway: Driver pursued after 50km wrong-way chase
A 32-year-old woman caused a major disruption on Italy's A1 motorway after driving the wrong way for more than 50 kilometers. The incident, which took place near the Apennines on August 20, lasted approximately 40 minutes.
Driving a German-registered Volkswagen Caddy, the woman turned around at the Citerna pass and headed against the flow of traffic. Six police officers pursued the vehicle through several sections of the motorway, including Barberino di Mugello, Badia, and Roncobilaccio. The chase continued through the Barberino toll booth, where the driver turned back toward Bologna.
Authorities eventually apprehended the driver by coordinating with Autostrade per l’Italia to close sections of the motorway. Following her arrest, the woman was hospitalized in a highly agitated state. Medical examinations determined that her erratic behavior was caused by a cannabis overdose.
