Italy A22 Crash Kills 27‑Year‑Old Driver Matteo Buoninconti

On the morning of 16 June, a collision on the A22 motorway between the Affi and Verona Nord toll stations in Italy involved a Mazda 3 and a stationary tractor‑trailer parked in a lay‑by. The impact was fatal for the driver, 27‑year‑old Matteo Buoninconti, who died instantly. His 29‑year‑old girlfriend survived but was seriously injured and was taken to a Verona hospital.

Firefighters from Bardolino and Mantova rescued the occupants, while the highway police and Autostrada del Brennero teams carried out traffic control and began investigations. Early inquiries consider a possible medical episode or a sudden mistake as causes of the loss of control. Matteo, originally from Castellammare di Stabia in the Province of Napoli, had lived for several years in Laives, South Tyrol, where he owned the pizzeria Mattè in the Galleria Europa of Bolzano. Traffic flow returned to normal around 11 a.m. after the incident.
