Italy accelerates development of the Messina Strait Bridge
The Italian government is accelerating the development of the Messina Strait Bridge. An operational meeting was held at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport involving Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, and Pietro Ciucci, CEO of Stretto di Messina.
The discussions focused on the technical, economic, and administrative documentation of the definitive project, as well as ongoing communications with the European Commission. Officials stated that the project is in an advanced stage, with the goal of starting construction this year. The next step involves an examination by the Interministerial Committee for Economic Programming and Sustainable Development (CIPESS), which will prepare a new resolution for review by the Court of Auditors.
The proposed bridge is designed with a 200-year lifespan. It will feature a central suspended span of 3,300 meters and a total length of 3,666 meters. The structure will include three road lanes in each direction, two service lanes, and two railway tracks. The construction timeline is estimated at 7.5 years, with operations expected to begin in 2034.
