Italy acquires Masseria Garzia built over ancient Roman amphitheater
The Italian State has officially acquired Masseria Garzia, a historic complex located in Siponto, Manfredonia, which was constructed atop the remains of an ancient Roman amphitheater. The acquisition was facilitated by the Ministry of Culture and the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape for the provinces of Foggia and BAT.
The structure contains visible portions of Roman masonry in 'opera reticolata' used as foundations, serving as a physical link to the ancient monument. Following the notification of a sale in December 2025, Superintendent Anita Guarnieri exercised the right of pre-emption under Article 60 of the Cultural Heritage Code. The transfer to the State Property was formalized by decree in February 2026 and transcribed in May 2026.
The property has been assigned to the Ministry of Culture to ensure its protection, research, and enhancement. This move is expected to expand the Siponto Archaeological Park and create a new cultural hub alongside the existing National Archaeological Museum and the site known for the works of Edoardo Tresoldi.
