Italy addresses energy transition and rising electricity costs

Stakeholders in Italy are addressing critical challenges regarding the energy transition and rising electricity costs. At a national roundtable on energy storage held in Rome, Massimiliano Albanese, Secretary of the Unione Consumatori Italiani (UCI), urged policymakers and industry leaders to treat consumers as active participants in the transition rather than mere spectators. The meeting, which included representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) and major companies such as Enel, Edison, and Shell, focused on permitting processes for energy storage systems and the need for technological competition to reduce local environmental impacts.

Simultaneously, economic data highlights the financial strain of energy prices on the Italian productive system. According to analyses by Confartigianato, micro and small businesses in the province of Padua face an extra cost of 66 million euros for electricity compared to the European average. On a national scale, this gap is estimated at 3.7 billion euros. The report indicates that small Italian enterprises pay 17.9% more for electricity than the EU average and face tax and para-fiscal levies that are 47.4% higher, a factor that threatens regional competitiveness as electricity demand rises due to data centers and artificial intelligence.
