Italy addresses gambling through law enforcement and health monitoring
Authorities in Italy are addressing different facets of gambling issues, ranging from illegal operations to public health concerns. In the Basilicata region, the Guardia di Finanza has intensified investigations into illegal gambling and related money laundering activities. Recent inspections in Potenza and Matera targeted gaming halls, betting centers, and recharge points to ensure compliance with electronic gaming regulations and to prevent the laundering of illicit proceeds. One operator in the Lagonegrese area was reported for failing to ensure financial traceability during multiple game account recharges, facing potential fines of up to €20,000.
In Lombardy, data from the Nexus Observatory’s ‘L’Italia delle Dipendenze 2025’ report highlights the scale of gambling addiction. In 2025, 2,830 individuals were treated for Gambling Disorder (DGA) across seven regional health agencies, accounting for 7% of all addiction cases recorded. The highest concentration of these cases was found in the Milan ATS area, which recorded 1,041 individuals. The data indicates a significant male prevalence among those seeking treatment, with a notable portion of patients being employed.
