Italy addresses prison infrastructure and staffing needs

Italian authorities are addressing systemic issues within the penitentiary system, focusing on infrastructure improvements and staffing shortages. In Grosseto, Deputy Fabrizio Rossi confirmed that the Meloni government is moving forward with a project for a new prison facility. The project involves an estimated investment of 46.53 million euros to create capacity for approximately 200 to 250 detainees. The site, formerly the Barbetti barracks, has been transferred to the Ministry of Justice, with preliminary investigations expected to conclude by January 2027.

Separately, Senator Ernesto Rapani met with officials at the Rossano prison to address security concerns following 14 reported assaults since March. The discussions highlighted a critical need to adjust staff levels to match the facility's complexity, particularly as it houses detainees involved in terrorism and individuals with significant psychological or addiction-related needs. Approximately 40 percent of the inmate population in Rossano suffers from psychological issues, and a similar percentage faces drug addiction challenges. Rapani emphasized that current staffing levels remain insufficient for the facility's specific requirements.
