Italy addresses recent youth-led unrest and public order

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi expressed satisfaction with the police and Carabinieri response to recent weekend unrest, which resulted in hundreds of detentions. During an emergency meeting in Milan regarding public order management, Piantedosi stated there is no evidence that the youth involved in the destruction were being manipulated by foreign entities. He characterized the unrest as a “new, unknown phenomenon” and emphasized the need for preventative measures alongside police action.

President Sergio Mattarella condemned the violence while expressing solidarity with law enforcement. He noted that the situation is a significant social issue requiring institutional sensitivity and comprehensive solutions to address the underlying problems facing young people.

In response to the instability, mayors from eight major Italian cities, including Rome, Milan, Florence, and Turin, have requested an urgent meeting with the Meloni government. These leaders are seeking immediate government action on systemic issues such as housing, public transportation, and job security.
