Italy ecological transition: industrial recycling gains and renewable energy tensions
Italy is experiencing diverse developments regarding the ecological transition, ranging from industrial circular economy successes to local resistance against renewable energy infrastructure.
In the industrial sector, new recycling facilities are emerging. A textile recycling plant in San Pietro Mosezzo, developed by STADLER and IGERS, is the first in Italy to integrate all treatment phases. Similarly, the Rule project in Padua, funded by the PNRR, aims to recover up to 95% of textile waste for use in fashion and construction. In the glass industry, Legambiente recognized the Vetri Speciali plant in Spini di Gardolo for its resilient sustainability and use of 90% recycled glass.
On the energy front, renewable energy communities (CER) are expanding, notably in Trentino, where families are sharing local production to reduce costs. However, large-scale projects face opposition. In Calabria, protesters and mayors are demanding zero land consumption for wind projects. In Sardinia, the Olivinditta project by Repsol has met formal opposition from local committees due to potential impacts on the Coiluna forest and archaeological sites. Additionally, residents in Durazzanino are monitoring Terna's technical surveys for a new energy conversion station connected to the Adriatic Backbone.
In forestry, the Piedmont region has allocated 6.6 million euros to support the wood supply chain and forest investments.
