Italy advances environmental and renewable energy strategies

Claudio Barbaro, the Undersecretary for the Environment and Energy Security, has outlined the Meloni government's approach to environmental and energy policy. Emphasizing political stability as a prerequisite for long-term planning, Barbaro stated that the administration aims to move beyond emergency responses toward structured programming. He proposed a vision where protected areas are not merely restrictive zones but are integrated into the economy through research, tourism, and environmental education.

Key initiatives mentioned include the establishment of Capo Spartivento and progress toward the Portofino National Park and the Matese area. The government's strategy seeks to balance environmental protection with economic productivity.

At the local level, the municipal council of Castiglione della Pescaia has approved strategic guidelines for the placement of renewable energy plants. The resolution prioritizes the use of already urbanized, paved, or degraded surfaces—such as rooftops, parking lots, industrial areas, and landfills—to avoid the consumption of new agricultural land or the compromise of the local landscape. Mayor Elena Nappi emphasized that the goal is to support the energy transition without sacrificing the territory's agricultural and environmental equilibrium.
