Italy advances major architectural restoration projects in Naples and Palermo

In Naples, the municipal administration has launched a tender for the restoration and repurposing of the former San Francesco delle Cappuccinelle convent in the Avvocata district. The project, valued at approximately 5.3 million euros, aims to transform the complex into a high-level training center for arts and artistic craftsmanship, alongside accommodation spaces for young artists. The initiative includes roughly 4,550 square meters of indoor space for workshops and studios. The works are funded through the 2014-2020 Cohesion Development Fund as part of the ‘Napoli – Centro storico’ institutional development contract.

In Palermo, the San Giovanni Maria Vianney church in Falsomiele is undergoing a long-term reconfiguration project. Often compared to Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia, the project seeks to transform the 1960s-era parish complex into a contemporary monastery. Due to structural issues caused by damp soil, previous interventions focused on seismic reinforcement and ventilation systems. After two decades of gradual development funded largely by parishioner donations, new momentum is being applied to complete the transformation.
