Italy advances major road projects in Como and Sardinia

The Variante della Tremezzina tunnel project on the Lake Como shoreline has entered a new development phase. After delays due to geological and environmental issues, ANAS and the construction consortium have signed a fresh contract to accelerate work, targeting completion by April 2031. More than 200 workers will be deployed from September to advance underground excavations, with the Comacina gallery now about 1,300 m deep and the service gallery over 930 m. Additional works include reopening tunnel portals near Griante and completing a new roundabout at Grandola, while a concrete plant will open soon in Castiglione d’Intelvi. From autumn 2026, ANAS will also fund measures to remove critical road narrowings between Colonno and Griante to lessen traffic disruption.

In Sardinia, the new roundabout replacing the former SR 131 near Sestu continues its construction after a start in October. Works have faced delays from design changes and weather alerts, but authorities aim to open the roundabout before the summer holidays. The project includes pedestrian crossing upgrades, safety measures for disabled users, and connection to nearby cycle paths. The total cost is €2.69 million, and the site remains inaccessible to traffic pending completion.
