Matera infrastructure and tourism developments in Southern Italy

Several regional developments are underway in Southern Italy. The municipal government of Matera has ratified a memorandum of understanding with Gravina in Puglia to establish a strategic tourism and cultural cooperation framework. This three-year agreement aims to promote sustainable and seasonal tourism by managing visitor flows and creating shared cultural itineraries between the two locations.

In terms of infrastructure, the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security and the Ministry of Culture have issued an interministerial decree approving the environmental compatibility of the "Murgia-Pollino" link and the Matera bypass. The project, estimated to cost over 500 million euros, includes the bypass of the SS7 Matera-Ferrandina road to improve traffic flow and connectivity. The approval is subject to compliance with specified environmental conditions.

Regarding seasonal traffic, significant congestion was reported on the A4 motorway (Venice-Trieste) due to summer holiday departures, with heavy traffic recorded at the Lisert barrier near Trieste. Similarly, transit spikes were noted on highways in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
