Italy advances plastic waste solutions through biotechnology and education
In Italy, new initiatives are addressing plastic waste through both scientific research and community education.
The ProPla (Proteins from Plastics) project, coordinated by the University of Insubria and funded by Fondazione Cariplo, has concluded its three-year research cycle. The project focused on using biotechnology to convert PET microplastics found in water into high-value amino acids. This research involved six research units, including the CNR, to evaluate the environmental impact and economic sustainability of transitioning these biotechnological processes from the laboratory to industrial applications.
Simultaneously, environmental education programs have launched in Pineto schools. Promoted by AiCS Italia in collaboration with the Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area, these workshops aim to teach students about plastic recovery and reuse. The initiative focuses on the Teramo coast, encouraging young people to move beyond simple waste separation toward a more conscious rethinking of material use to protect local marine ecosystems.
