Italy advances water infrastructure and purification projects

Italian municipalities are advancing major water infrastructure projects to address supply issues and environmental protection. In Piombino, the local administration is collaborating with Asa and Ait to develop a plan to prevent water shortages during the summer months. Proposed measures include building-by-building inspections, pressure adjustments, support for condominium administrators, and potential subsidies for installing water tanks to mitigate the impact of climate change and increased summer consumption.

In Rimini, officials from Romagna Acque, Hera Group, and local government reviewed the progress of the Optimized Bathing Safeguard Plan (Psbo). Recognized by the United Nations as a model for sustainable development, this €290 million project is one of Italy’s largest water purification and remediation efforts. The initiative includes 45 kilometers of new sewage pipes and the redevelopment of 11 sea outfalls to eliminate bathing bans and protect against flooding via underground storage tanks. Future plans involve repurposing treated water for agricultural irrigation.
