Italy advances water purification projects in Basilicata and Calabria

A three‑year mandate by the Extraordinary Commissioner for Water Treatment, Fabio Fatuzzo, has been reviewed at a conference in Rome’s Sala Zuccari. Senior officials—including Senate President Ignazio La Russa and ministers Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Nello Musumeci and Adolfo Urso—highlighted progress toward meeting EU infringement procedures and expanding water‑reuse in agriculture and industry.

In Basilicata, four key plants have been completed (Matera‑Sarra, Alta Valle dell’Agri, Grassano, Matera‑Pantano) and additional works at Pisticci, Matera‑Lamione and other sites are underway. The region, Italy’s top water exporter, is focusing on sustainable use after a severe drought.

In Calabria, interventions worth roughly €350 million have moved to tender or construction, notably a €145 million Reggio Calabria program and recent completions in Oppido and San Roberto. The effort reflects a coordinated funding and payment model that has accelerated stalled projects and aims to secure reliable water resources for the southern Italian population.
