Italy aims to cancel sugar tax, says MEF Undersecretary

Sandra Savino, Undersecretary of State at the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance, has expressed the political objective of canceling the proposed sugar tax. Speaking at an Assobibe event in Rome, Savino emphasized the need for regulatory certainty to allow businesses to engage in effective long-term planning.

Savino noted that the government has had sufficient time since the approval of last year’s budget law to evaluate the measure. While acknowledging that the government has faced various critical situations, she stated that the intention is to remove these additional tax burdens. The sugar tax is currently scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027, unless further legislative interventions occur.
