Italian infectious‑disease specialist warns of travel‑related tick and mosquito threats

Matteo Bassetti, director of infectious diseases at Genoa’s San Martino Hospital, cautions travellers about a range of health hazards. In Italy’s Belluno area and the broader northeast (Veneto, Friuli‑Venezia Giulia) he notes recent cases of tick‑borne encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme disease, urging the use of repellents and window screens. He forecasts a rise in West Nile virus infections spread by Culex mosquitoes, which are now endemic.

Bassetti also highlights risks from dengue in Italy and tropical destinations, the presence of chikungunya in Italy, and the threat of malaria for visitors to Central Africa and Southeast Asia, recommending prophylaxis. He points to measles outbreaks in the United States, Mexico and Canada, stressing vaccination checks, and advises meningococcal B and C vaccination for students abroad. Food‑borne dangers such as salmonella, campylobacter and shigella, as well as respiratory infections like legionella, influenza in Australia and sexually transmitted infections, are also mentioned. Preventive measures include repellents, protective clothing, vaccinations and safe food and water practices.
