Italy allocates 400 million euros annually for hydrogen production

Italy’s Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) has launched a new national mechanism to support the production of renewable and biohydrogen. The initiative includes an annual spending limit of 400 million euros, targeting an incentivized production capacity of up to 200,000 tonnes per year.

The measure aligns with European Union policies, including the Green Deal and the ‘Fit for 55’ package, as part of Italy’s strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The funding aims to foster a national supply chain for green hydrogen produced via electrolysis, as well as biohydrogen derived from biomass, biogas, or biomethane.

Minister Gilberto Pichetto stated that the provision provides a stable and competitive tool to accompany the growth of the Italian hydrogen sector. The goal is to allow companies and investors to plan new industrial interventions, strengthening national energy security and decarbonizing heavy industry and transport sectors that are difficult to electrify.
