Italy and Algeria sign police protocol to speed migrant identification and repatriation

Italy’s Chief of Police, Prefect Vittorio Pisani, travelled to Algiers and, together with Algeria’s National Security Director Ali Badaoui, signed a technical‑operational protocol. The agreement establishes joint police checks, including fingerprint database comparisons, to identify irregular migrants and accelerate their removal to the appropriate country.

The pact is described as a historic step in bilateral security cooperation, extending beyond migration to include training and possible sharing of expertise on cyber‑crime threats. Both sides highlighted the intent to improve community safety through more efficient handling of illegal border crossings.
