Italy and Czech Republic adopt 2026–2030 strategic Action Plan

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš met in Prague to strengthen bilateral relations and coordinate positions within the European Union. The leaders adopted an Action Plan for 2026–2030, which serves as a roadmap for cooperation in economic security, defense, migration, and science. Key cultural initiatives include an Italy-Czech Republic Year of Culture scheduled for 2027–2028.

A major focus of the summit was energy policy and industrial competitiveness. The two leaders prepared a joint package of proposals for the upcoming European Council, specifically targeting reforms to the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) to mitigate rising energy costs. They also called for flexibility or a temporary suspension of EU methane regulations to ensure energy security and prevent supply disruptions. Additionally, the leaders agreed to explore cooperation in next-generation nuclear energy, including small modular reactors (SMRs).

On the EU budget, both nations expressed a commitment to protecting agricultural and cohesion policies while advocating for reduced bureaucratic spending. Meloni also addressed the Giulio Regeni case, reaffirming Italy’s determination to seek truth and justice through all available diplomatic and political channels, while expressing caution regarding the potential impact of closing communication with Egypt.
